One of the milestones in a child’s life is their first trip to the dentist. Our experienced, caring team at Georgia Orthodontics & Children’s Dentistry are ready to welcome you and your child when it comes time for their first dental checkup and other pediatric dental services. We recommend children have their first dental exam before 12 months to ensure that they are on the right path to a beautiful, healthy smile.

What to Expect on Your Child's First Visit

Creating a fun and comfortable environment is our top priority at Georgia Orthodontics and Children’s Dentistry! We understand that you and your child may be nervous about their first visit and we are focused on treating your child and not just their teeth. Our goal is for you and your child to have a great experience!

During your child’s first visit with our experienced pediatric dentist, Dr. Chong will perform an examination of the mouth, teeth and gums. We will address any and all concerns you may have and may also perform a cleaning and a fluoride treatment to help prevent cavities. If necessary, we may take cavity detecting X-rays. Pediatric dentistry is focused on preventive measures to ensure ongoing dental health, therefore we will also make recommendations for you as a parent on how to best care for your child’s teeth at home.

How to Prepare Your Child's First Visit

We want both you and your child to be as comfortable as possible for your first visit! To help your child have a great first visit at our office, we suggest not focusing too much attention on the upcoming dentist appointment. Sometimes the parent is more nervous about the visit than the child and children are able to pick up on this. Try your best to be excited about their visit! If they come to our office happy, we are more able to provide them with an excellent, fun experience!

It is common for well-meaning parents to try and prepare their children for the appointment, only to make their child more wary of going to the dentist. Word choice is very important and we suggest you do not use any scary sounding words. Try to make sure that other family members (especially older siblings) are not as well. In many cases, the less the child knows, the better. Rest assured that we will never push your child to complete any treatment that you are uncomfortable with. The entire team at Georgia Orthodontics & Children’s Dentistry is excellent at working with young children and making them feel at ease during their first visit.

Am I Able to Accompany My Child?

Of course! We believe it is very important for you to be with your child, especially during their first visit. As they grow older and more independent, you are more than welcome to relax in our comfortable waiting room while we care for your child!
