A dental professional in blue scrubs and mask talks to a smiling patient seated in a dental chair.

If you are seeing an orthodontist with your child for the first time, it is likely because your dentist has detected some areas of concern or potential concern. These are issues that may impact the appearance of your child’s smile or the way your their teeth fit together (bite). This initial visit with an orthodontist doesn’t mean you’ll walk away with braces. In fact, it could be several years before your child is in braces. What this consult does do, however, is allow a trained orthodontist to evaluate your child’s mouth and develop an appropriate plan of action based on a thorough discussion of treatment options.

In most cases, your first visit will be brief, or about 30 minutes. Your child will likely go back for a set of x-rays so that the orthodontist as the most current understanding of what is happening inside your child’s mouth with the teeth that are already there as well as any that are yet to emerge.

Most of the time will be spent talking. You and your child will meet with the orthodontist or a staff representative to discuss basic orthodontic treatment and what it may mean for your child specifically. Every case is unique! You can expect to get answers to the following questions during this visit:

  • Is there a condition that orthodontics can address?
  • Is treatment needed now or should treatment be delayed until appropriate growth, tooth eruption or other factors have occurred?
  • What treatment procedures will be used to correct the problem?
  • Do any permanent teeth need to be removed?
  • How long will treatment take?
  • How much will it cost?
  • What are my payment options?

How can we make your first visit more comfortable at Georgia Orthodontics & Children’s Dentistry? While your first consultation will primarily consist of a discussion of treatment options, time frames and financial arrangements, we encourage our young patients and their parents to ask us about any other concerns you may have regarding orthodontic treatment at our Milton office.

We realize orthodontic treatment is a notable investment of time and money, and the final smile straightening results are extremely important.
